Elizabeth Matos, PhD, RN, CNE
Dr. Elizabeth “Liz” Matos is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. With over 25 years of combined clinical and academic experience, she is an enthusiastic nurse educator dedicated to advancing the nursing profession and improving student retention. In the BSN program, she teaches key courses such as Complex Concepts of Nursing and Leadership.
A central focus of Dr. Matos's work is expanding nursing education and healthcare access in underserved areas. She has a deep passion for community outreach, particularly to rural communities, where she has spearheaded recruitment initiatives for high school students. Through the use of hands-on activities and high-fidelity simulation, her program introduces future nurses to the profession, earning her the prestigious Texans Caring for Texans Award.
Dr. Matos is a leader in interprofessional education and student mentorship. She is actively involved with Amarillo Disaster Day, a large-scale event that brings together students from nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. As an integral representative for the School of Nursing, she helped launch the inaugural Amarillo Research Day and was recognized with the Quality Team Award for her committee's work. She continues to mentor senior nursing students in developing and presenting their research posters.
Demonstrating her commitment to university governance and faculty development, Dr. Matos serves on the TTUHSC Faculty Senate and the Professional Development committee. She also played a key role on the curriculum committee during the School of Nursing's most recent CCNE accreditation visit. Dr. Matos is an active member of the Texas Nurses Association and has served on the Healthy Work Environment subcommittee for the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (ISPIN). She holds a PhD in Adult Education Leadership from Walden University and both an MSN and BSN from West Texas A&M University.
